Camp Cards

Den Leaders will be handing out camp cards next month and the Pack will have a signup sheet to sell cards at Tom Thumb. Additional details will be provided at the Pack meeting, but if you have questions ask your Den Leader.

What’s Poppin?

popcorn2015Popcorn sales run primarily September and October and is traditionally a major fundraiser for Cub Scouts. The product is delivered in early November (precise dates TBA). Why do we sell popcorn?  In short, it raises more money to fund programs!

Here are more SCOUT reasons.

  1. Scouts experience adult interaction (a Scouting method).
  2. Character building.
  3. Scouts are responsible for their own program.
  4. Incentives (prizes, money, trips, etc.)
  5. Scholarship Fund.
  6. Easy and profitable compared to other fundraisers for both the council and the unit.

The Future of Scouting

This is an update to an earlier post, with direct links and information to the upcoming Cub Scout changes. 

For the last several years, the Boy Scouts of America has been pursuing a strategic, national plan on how to update the Cub Scout program.  In late 2009 volunteers met with national BSA staff and leaders in the field of child development to discuss “What Today’s Youth Want and Need”.

From that kickoff meeting, the BSA has been designing the changes to the Cub Scout, Boy Scout, and Venturing programs.  Starting on June 1st, 2015, the Cub Scouts will begin to implement these changes and transition to a program designed around these core desired outcomes:

  • More Cub Scouts being active/having fun
  • Improved Webelos transition/retention
  • Simplified advancement
  • Improved connection to mission and aims

While Cub Scout leaders (our Pack and Den leadership) need to be most familiar with the upcoming changes, everyone with an interest is invited to learn more about them. In January the BSA held a series of webcasts to outline the changes, and these webcasts are available on the web for anyone interested.  We’ve highlighted some specific information below, but all of the information is available on the BSA program updates page at http://www.scouting.org/Home/programupdates.aspx

A Scout is Helpful

Scouting For FoodGoodTurn4k

When: February 7th and 14th

Scouting for Food is the largest single-day food collection event in Dallas and one of the largest in the nation!  On one day, approximately 30,000 Scouts, go door-to-door collecting non-perishable food items for the less fortunate.  The food is then distributed to local food pantries and assistance agencies across Circle Ten Council.

This year’s Scouting for Food Drive is scheduled for February 7th and 14th.  Local Boy Scout Troops will be collecting our bags of food at the Tom Thumb at Legacy & Coit on Feb. 15th, probably from about 10am to 2pm (exact times TBD).  Den Leaders will be sending out information on meeting points and copies of maps.  This activity takes 1-2 hours.  Adult volunteers are needed to accompany scouts door-to-door, and pull wagons with the collected food (or drive a car).  Please contact your Den Leader if you can assist.

Blue and Gold Banquet

Good evening everyone!

I hope that you all enjoyed spring break.  I am happy to announce that we have been able to reschedule our Blue & Gold celebration.  We will host it at Robinson Middle School on Saturday, March 28th.  The time will be the same, 5:30PM-8:00PM.

All original reservations will remain the same.  If any changes need to be made, please contact Amy Nelson as soon as possible. If you have any questions about Blue & Gold, please feel free to contact either myself or Jill.

We look forward to recognizing all of our scouts for their rank advancement!

Save the Date!  March 28, 2015 (Saturday)

Blue and Gold is our annual awards banquet where Scouts are recognized for completing their ranks.  Please join us as we honor all our Cub Scouts with a face painting ceremony, recognize the contributions of our adult volunteers and bid farewell to our Webelos II scout with a special Arrow of Light Ceremony and Crossover.  It’s a night full of ceremonies, traditions and fun!

As with all of our activities, there are costs involved.  Contributing to the event’s raffle is each family’s part in making an amazing night come together.  Please check with your Den Leader on how you can help donate to the raffle.

In addition to individual raffle item donations, leaders have decided to assign each den a themed basket to raffle.  The money raised from selling raffle tickets will pay for the room rental, supplies and portions of the ceremony.

This year our banquet will be catered by Taco Cabana, and will be child and vegetarian friendly!  Meal tickets are $10/person, and the pack will pay for each Scout.  We need to know ASAP how many from your family are attending, so if you have not done so, please let your Den Leader know.  If you weren’t able to pay at the Pack Meeting, you can mail your payment to Amy Nelson.  Deadline for the payments is Saturday Feb. 20th.

A lot is being planned for this fun evening.  Please check with your den leader to see what you can do to make this a night to remember!

Congratulations to all the scouts of Pack 112 who have worked hard on achieving their ranks this year.  Thank you also to all the den leaders, pack leaders, parents and siblings for helping each scout become the best scout they can be.  Family involvement is essential to Cub Scouting’s success.

Pinewood Derby 2015

Let’s get our Pinewood Derby Racers built!

We passed out 14 kits to scouts, and sold 6 more kits to siblings and adults. So we have 20 racers out there so far.  Strangely enough, the kits passed out to Scouts is almost exactly equal to the number of Webelos I’s and Webelos ll’s.

We need Tigers, Bears, and Wolves!!!!

Don’t be afraid, we will help!!  The “Build a Car” Workshop is new this year.  We thought it would be a great way to get the cars built quickly and with minimum difficulty.

If it sounds too costly, we might be able to do a DYI Car Build Event for free.  See the attachment on this.  Even without using the Car Build Workshops, or the Car Build DYI Event, there are a lot of ways to get a car built, so buy a kit, and call a Webelo parent (use the den directory in Scout Tracker, or call me).  We’re a huge den with 4 year’s experience building racers.  We can help.  (Yes, you’re welcome Webelos parents… :) )

If you would like a kit, you can buy from me. $5 each.

Small Print. 

At the pack meeting last Monday, I acquiesced to some advice and sold kits for $4.  It was a nightmare.  I don’t plan on carrying a wad of $1’s with me for the next couple months, so consider it an early-bird special.  The price is as I originally announced. $5.  The money goes to the pack.

The kits are available at the Scout Store for $4.  It’s a 20 minute round trip and costs $0.83 in gas (just kidding about the gas part, and anyway it depends on whether you drive Dereks’ car or Damons’ truck).

Support your pack and buy from me for $5.

Kits will also be available again at the January pack meeting.  Bring at least $10, ‘cause you’ll want one for your Scout (which is free, the pack pays for the Scouts) and one for a sibling, and one for yourself so you can enter your kick – butt Unlimited Racer.  If you get really crazy (oops, I mean creative) and come up with an ultimate challenger-crushing racer, you can enjoy the prestige of being picked for the Ultra Class (Stewards Discretion).

CUBOREE – A Fantastic Campout

Camp Wisdom has to be one of the most fantastic places in all of Kid-dom.  

My son is new to scouting, and I’m new to scouting as well.  I had no idea what to expect when I signed my family up to camp at CUBOREE, except that it was going to be camping – which I enjoy.  But going didn’t come without some sacrifice.  My work commitments would be tugging at my phone all weekend; I’d be missing my middle daughter’s final game of the soccer season, and I’d be heading back to work on Monday without my normal weekend to get “caught up” on the previous week.  But I was so glad to come out and spend the weekend with my son, my teenage daughter, and all the other scouts and families at Camp Wisdom.

Archery LineupThe place can be a bit of a maze.  I’m not sure that’s a bad thing – but when we’re used to GPS and Google Maps and turn-by-turn directions, heading down a gravel road with a blurry copy of a paper map is a little daunting.  There are signs, but trying to correlate those with the camp map is not always easy.  But with a little bit of patience we found our way there, and to our campsite at Indian Trail, and as the weekend went on we came to get a general feel for the layout of the camp and how to get from place to place.

Over the course of Saturday, we, the scouts and their families traipsed all over.  There is so much outdoor fun for the scouts, and seeing them run, interact and be energetic boys was great to witness.  There’s a BB gun range, archery, a castle, air rocket launching pad, a frontier fort, a cave, and a battle of sailing ships unlike anything I’ve ever seen. CUBOREE

Just a reminder that CUBOREE is this weekend (10/25/2014). Cuboree is a weekend campout held at Camp Wisdom near Cedar Hill. The weekend is organized by our Northern Lights District and includes: BB’s, Archery, Fort Farrington & Sir Dee Castle, the Pirate Ships, the Native American Village, games, crafts and much more. This year’s theme is “Going Batty”

Pack 112 has a great group of families attending this year.

They DO want/accept WALK-IN registrations. Anyone in Pack 112 is welcome to camp overnight, although not required.

Please join us if you have time in your schedule this weekend. CUBOREE is a favorite scout activity each year. Evening activities include songs, skits, a costume contest, and a viewing of “Halloweentown” movie (Disney 1998).

It’s Poptober!

It’s popcorn time! The proceeds from this fundraiser go directly to help our Pack pay for expenses and activities for the year, as well as supporting our local council’s facilities, staffing, program materials and resources.

Reminder!  Order forms are due November 7th!  If you have any final questions about popcorn sales, please contact Chad O’Neal.

Scouts can participate in a variety of ways

Online Sales this is the best way to sell to your friends and family who live out of town. You can send emails to your customers asking them to purchase Trail’s End popcorn online.  Friends and family can order year-round!

Show & Sell your den, pack or troop gets permission to sell in front of a retail store or in the local mall.  You set up a display with products for people to purchase as they walk by.

Take Order the most traditional way to sell popcorn; going door-to-door with the take order form, which you receive from your leader or council.

Show & Deliver you carry Trail’s End popcorn with you to show to your customers as you visit them.  The customer is able to select the products he or she wishes to buy from your product selection.

Corporate This is for savvy Scouts!  Selling to businesses is a great market to have big sells.  Whether the owner buys popcorn as gifts for their employees, or they allow the popcorn to be sold at the lobby or break room.
